Theodore Heyck and Sophie Caroline Hanauer
Sophie Hanauer was born at sea on December 10, 1843, aboard the brig Jean Key. Her parents, Anton and Mary Anna Hanauer, moved the family to Texas as part of the colonozation of Texas led by Henri Castro. Theodore Heyck was born in Dockenhuden, Holstein, Germany near the North Sea on the river Elbe. He left from Bremen for Galveston, Texas, on the ship Solon and arrived on June 1, 1852.
Theodore clerked in Galveston until January 1853 and then accepted the position as Bookkeeper of the firm G.W. Adams and Co. Shipping and Commission at Port Lavaca,
Texas. He became a partner in the business with C.H. Jordan and thereafter established the shipping commission business of Heyck and Helferich at Port Lavaca.
Theodore served in the first Texas Cavalary, under Col. Buchel from March 1863 until Lee's surrender in April 1865. He opened up business again in Port Lavaca in 1865 through 1872 and thereafter moved to Galveston in 1881.
Theodore and Sophie were married January 9, 1866 in Victoria and had children:
The family moved to Abilene, Texas, where Theodore continued in the mercantile business until his death on January 18, 1909. Sophie moved to Victoria, Texas, after Theodore's death.
Sophie died September 5, 1920, in Victoria, Texas. Theodore's remains were moved from Abilene to Victoria. Theodore and Sophie are buried in Catholic Cemetery #02 in Victoria, Texas.
